The geometry and carbon remain the same, with the positioning of the material adjusted to best work with flat-mount disc brakes and thru-axles.

Endurance road is an idea as much as a category. Think of it as classic road racing geometry, eschewing short head tubes and a painfully-rigid ride for something that is easier to fit, more comfortable to ride, fast without being twitchy. It’s a bike for long miles and hard riding, but with greater comfort and more stability. This is still very much a race bike. Just one you can slam the stem on, which is a plus for front-end stiffness and steering precision.

The bike, despite the cutting-edge production and shaping, rides very much like a classic Basso. The geometry as well as the tubing shapes and carbon plies work together to result in a bike that helps you feel in control whether sprinting out of a sharp corner or zooming down a steep, straight road.

The frame is made entirely of carbon, with no aluminum reinforcements anywhere. This saves weight, and with Basso, they more than made up the strength by using three types of carbon fiber placed at three different orientations to maximize the strengths of the material. The bulk of the fiber mix is headlined by Torayca High Modulus Carbon Fiber T700-MR60. They’ve even added 3K plies on the inside of the heat tube and bottom bracket juncture to increase stiffness without adding weight.

Several of the frame tubes have been sculpted to slice the wind. They’re slippery, with a bladed head tube and Kamm-tail style downtube, and a slight cutout at the bottom of the seat tube to better shroud the rear wheel and fit larger tires--28mm thanks to the fact that rim brakes aren’t limiting the tire space.

But the aerodynamics hasn’t been maximized because they wanted to balance out aero with stiffness and compliance. They aero is here to compliment the rest of the ride. That’s why the downtube flares wide to the BB86 bottom bracket, which also helps keep the chainstays as wide as possible, for better lateral bracing still. But these features aren’t at the expense of road compliance. They’ve flattened and bowed the seat stays to take up road vibrations and chatter. And the included seatpost is round, 31.6mm in diameter, because the shape works better at dealing with bump absorption. The top tube is also designed for compliance, starting big in front, and flattening and narrowing as it travels back to the seat cluster.

The bike comes with a 350mm long seatpost possessing 15mm of setback. It also includes a tapered 1 1/8” to 1 ½” headset to match the tapered steerer. They have thrown in a Basso stem and three 5mm Basso stack spacers, which are designed to match the stem and maximize aerodynamics. Whether you’re running mechanical or electronic shifting, the Astra can handle it, with stops and plugs included, allowing you to choose the shifting mode you prefer.

The braking is via rotor disc calipers. The max rotor size that fits here is 160mm. The version you see here is a Limited Edition version painted as part of a collaboration with MAAP cycling clothing so that the MAAP-Basso Team of Melbourne, Australia has a bike finished to match the bold design of the team kit. It’s a great partnership, mating a hand-crafted Italian stallion with the strong aesthetic of this Australian clothier. The bike is a show-stopper, turning heads on every ride. Bicycling magazine selected it as the bike to buy if you want a ride that stands out.

Basso deploys Torayca T1000 and T800 carbon fiber plies, among other cloths, in the tubing makeup. The high-modulus fibers are aligned in different directions with different grades are utilized to maximize stiffness while still remaining strong. The only aluminum you’ll find in the frame is the derailleur hangers. The result is a 790g frame and 390g fork that is impressively stiff, turning your energy into forward motion.

The geometry is identical to the Diamante SV. It’s because Basso believes these dimensions yield the best ride qualities. Fast, with a light touch all that’s necessary to guide the bike through tight turns, and stable enough to scream down mountains in a full tuck.

The Diamante is slightly more traditional than its SV sibling. There is more emphasis on ride quality than aerodynamics, though there certainly are aero concerns baked into the frame. The head tube is designed with the fork blades to present a minimal front to the wind. The fork crown is sculpted to integrate seamlessly into the downtube. And the seat tube has been sculpted to help hide the rear wheel. At the same time, the tubes have been shaped to maximize torsional stiffness and vertical compliance. You see it in the taper of the top tube, the flattening of the downtube as it moves to the wide BB86 bottom bracket shell. The chainstays taper on their route to the dropouts and the seatstays remain thin, flattened a bit to improve vertical compliance. Basso also utilizes a tapered steerer, with a traditional 1 1/8” upper expanding out to 1 1/2” by the fork crown. This increases torsional rigidity, making hard turns track easier, and keeping you in a straighter line when thrashing out of the saddle. Maximum recommended tire size is 25mm.

To provide the ride characteristics Basso is designing for, they also designed and included the seat post. Featuring a NACA aerodynamic profile, it matches the shape of the seat tube. The post is 350mm long and features 15mm of setback. Naturally, the clamp is included as well.

The bike is set up with internal cable routing, capable of running mechanical or electronic shifting. The requisite stops and plugs come with, and your run the battery for wired electronic systems inside the seat tube.

The frame comes with a Basso stem and a customizable head tube complete with spacers. The stem angle is -11 degrees and the lengths come as follows: size 45 frame comes with a 100mm stem, the 48 a 100, 51 a 110, 53 a 110, 56 a 110, 58 a 120, 61 a 120. Reading the geometry chart, you’ll notice that the head tube is relatively short. That’s assuming you are running your stem slammed or nearly slammed. The frame comes with Basso’s Kit Comfort System, which includes three 5mm spacers and a the Kit Comfort head tube extender, which raises the effective head tube length by 20mm, as it provides you with a taller cup into which you install the upper headset bearing. And with this installed, you can then add the 15mm of spacers. The result is a single frame that has 35mm of flexibility in terms of where your stem sits. You can run the stem slammed to get the head tube length in the spec sheet, and then add spacers up to 15mm. If you want the head tube to be 20mm higher than the spec sheet, add the Kit Comfort. Then you can put up to 15mm of spacers on top of that. This way, the frame works for those who prefer the super-low position of a pro or a more upright position favored by the less-flexible.

The Basso Diamante MAAP LTD Frameset has incredible style and a ride that exceeds its image.

The Basso Palta sees roads, trails, mud, dirt, gravel, pavement, sand, even a darkened wood, and says “si, certo!” It’s a category-blurring bike that is happy with all expressions of riding. It feels right going slow, fast, up, down, on pristine tarmac and ancient gravel footpaths, and anything else you desire to ride.

It accomplishes this through great design, both thought up and executed in Italy. They knew that a bike like this would have to fit 700c tires up to 42mm wide. So they built around the necessary clearance. Also, because of tires that size, they also knew it needed disc brakes; so they worked with 12mm thru axles, flat mounts for the brakes, and 160mm rotors. They knew that keeping the bike simple to operate was important as well, so they designed with single-ring drivetrains in mind.

Those are the elements they needed to work into the frame. In the front end, to keep steering precise without sending impacts directly into the bike, they designed straight fork legs with an offset crown. The crown is under a 1 ½” steerer that tapers to a traditional 1 1/8” at the stem. The headtube juncture is also fairly large to minimize deflection at the fork. The main triangle tapers in various directions to emphasize both power transfer and comfort. The top tube gets smaller and flatter as it moves from the head tube to the seat tube for compliance. The downtube grows a bit on its route to the BB86 bottom bracket to minimize lateral flex at the crank. The seat tube is scalloped both to better fit a fat tire in back as well as offer a little flexion. The tapered seatstays get thinner from the rear dropouts to the seat tube and there’s no tube joining the seatstays for a little more vertical compliance in back.

The geometry also combines an aggressive seat angle with slack head angle maximize agility, almost mountain bike like in its angles. The 430mm chain stays are the shortest they could make to fit 42mm tires. The drop is a cyclocross-like 65mm to make sure you can clear your pedals over big rock and steps and the unknown.

The proprietary seatpost is also designed with comfort in mind. It is fairly small in shape and even has an elastomer inside the post to damp vibration. The post itself is 300mm long and has 15mm of setback. The clamp works with all rails.

The frame comes with plugs and stops for internal cable routing choices, thru-axles, fork, headset, seatpost, stem and spacers. The Diamante stem works with 31.8mm diameter handlebars—the small comes with a 90mm stem, medium 90, Large 100, XL 100. 5mm stack spacers come with as well. If you want to run an internal battery, it can hook to the inside of the seatpost.

As this bike is built for adventure, you’ll find bottle cage mounting bolts in the traditional places on the down and seat tubes. They’ve also put an additional set under the downtube. For those who really crave going far off piste, Basso has an optional fork with three bottle cage holes on the outer faces of the fork blades.

They have also created an optional Endurance Pack that includes a painted 20mm spacer to put your stem higher. They’ve also created a Mudfest kit that included fenders made by Ass Savers.

The Basso Palta Medium frame weighs 960g unpainted. The fork weighs approximately 270g. It’s light, it’s stiff, it’s aero. It puts you in a classic racer position, and it looks incredible. The Diamante SV is the work of artisans who translate carbon fiber and tube shapes and frame geometry into a great ride. They employ a mix of Torayca carbon-fiber plies, including their high modulus T1000 and T800 cloth.

Weight. Aero shaping typically adds some weight to improve aerodynamics and retain stiffness frame stiffness. They need more material to get the elongated shapes, and since the elongated shapes are often in opposition to the needs of propelling a bicycle, even more material needs to be added. At 820g for the frame, and 390g for the fork, it’s hard to believe they actually added grams. Maybe it has to do with the fact that there are no aluminum pieces in the carbon, save the derailleur hangers. Then again, their more traditional Diamante is only 790g for the frame. And the two frames share the same torsional stiffness values at the bottom bracket and head tube. This is due to both the frame shaping as well as the wide BB86 bottom bracket shell and 1 1/8” to 1 1/2” tapered steerer tube.

The aero shaping is both dramatic and subtle. When seen from the side, the bike almost looks traditional. But the head tube and fork legs are shaped to smoothly move the wind around them, the fork crown smoothly blends into the downtube, the downtube is a modified Kamm Tail design with is lowered and almost U-shaped to better shroud bottles and fight torsional flex, and the seat tube is shaped to shroud the rear wheel. The shortened seat stays are aero shaped and also mean that the Kamm Tail seat tube has less turbulence behind it, and the less support adds vertical compliance at the top of the seat tube.

At every point of the bike, you’ll find things that improve on what you’ve come to expect as standard. The brakes are directly-mounted to the frame, moving them closer for better aerodynamics, lightening them up, and improving brake stiffness. The proprietary seat post, 350mm long with 15mm of setback and with measurement markings on the back, is U-shaped and goes into the frame through an elastomer. The gasket damps road vibrations and sits above the integrated three-bolt fixing system they’ve designed. These bolts sit flush with the back of the seat tube. The shaping is such you can fit 28mm tires without issue, opening up road choices, and long-distance comfort.

Then you can put spacers on top of that. This way, the frame works for those who prefer the super-low position of a pro or a more upright position favored by the less-flexible.

The Basso Diamante SV is the super-fast diamond that shines brightest when you take it out for a demanding ride.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0608/7684/9196/files/31273_488c6166-9759-4ee6-9929-07015c65878c.jpg?v=1764794326
